Your hike can start at the front door of the Governor's House. Take your choice of town, country roads, nature trails, woods, or along the river as you follow the map an choose the time or distance thats right for you. We also have many books which list nearby hikes and we have printouts to share of our favorites. A few are listed below.
Long Trail
The 270-mile footpath follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Canada. Built between 1910 & 1930, it's the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the country. There are 175 miles on its 82 side trails. Guides and maps available.

Lamoille Valley Rail Trail
Immediately adjacent to The Govenor's House in Hyde Park, this scenic trail that traverses the state from New Hampshire to New York is open for non-motor use and connects to a network of other trails. The old rail bed which follows, and sometimes crosses, the river through the mounatins has been described as the prettiest in Vermont. In winter, the trail is maintained by VAST for snowmobile use, but is also great for cross-country skiing.
Cricket Hill Trail
This trail was established and is maintained by Lamoille Union High School students and friends for hiking and cross-country skiing for our high school teams and the general public. There is no charge, but feel free to make a donation.

Smugglers' Notch State Park
It's a climb to the top, but the view is spectacular as you follow in the footsteps of those prohibition-era smugglers who gave the pass its name.
Moss Glen
Found in our guide to hikes with children, this easy hike to a waterfall remains one of our favorite short hikes.

The Gorge
The easy five-mile round-trip walk starts on Main Street in Hyde Park and ends in deep woods with a spectacular gorge that hides a beautiful pool which the adventuresome hiker may choose to use as a swimming hole.
Wiessner Woods Trails
Look for partridge, thrush, grouse, falcons, owls, deer, fox and an occasional moose or bear as you hike the beautiful trails in Wiessner Woods which are overseen by the Stowe Land Trust who also provide trail maps.

Fly fishing on the Lamoille River is a short walk from The Governor's House. We can't promise you'll catch some, but the offical Vermont fishing guide lists 13 varities of fish in the Lamoille River and the fisherman pictured here caught some nice trout.
